「気分の悪い、不機嫌な」という意味の古英語の「modig」に由来します。

She's been really moody lately, I wonder if something's bothering her.
最近彼女はとても気分が不安定だ。何か心配事があるのかな。
He's always so moody in the morning, it's hard to talk to him.
彼はいつも朝は不機嫌で、話しにくい。
I don't know why, but the weather always makes me feel moody.
なぜか天気が悪いと気分が沈みがちになる。

moodyは「気分屋の、気分が不安定な」という意味の形容詞です。人や天気などに対して使われることが多く、同じような意味を持つtemperamentalやirritable、grumpyなどの類似語もあります。
